The Institute of Applied Ecology has analysed terrestrial and aquatic habitats and ecosystems for more than 15 years. Founded in 1993 as a private research organization, the institute specializes on environmental monitoring, providing both public agencies and private companies with expert ecological consulting services. While most of our activities are carried out on the German Baltic coast, we are increasingly engaged in nation-wide and international projects. Our staff includes experts in the full range of scientific and engineering disciplines. Within an established network of international partners, we are committed to developing innovative ideas to understand the complexity of the natural environment and to assess human-caused environmental impacts.

In April 2012, the quality management system certified according to DIN ISO 9001:2008 was introduced. The certification demonstrates the increasingly close cooperation between the companies within the GICON Group, and the pursuit to provide services of all firms at the same high quality level. In parallel to the introduction of quality-related regulations, an environmental and occupational safety management system according to DIN ISO EN 14001 and OHSAS 18001 was also introduced.

The Institute of Applied Ecology houses state-of-the-art facilities and equipment, including benthological and eco-physiological laboratories, remote-controlled underwater vehicles, as well as radar and videographic systems for detecting migrating birds. Our specimen collection of benthic organisms includes almost 9000 classified individuals from 600 taxa. Our research facilities allow our experts to remain current with the latest developments in environmental science.
